Fake, out!

Dear American Girl Place,

You promise that “lessons of love, friendship, courage, compassion, and tolerance are at the heart of every American Girl story." Please read on, to find out how right you are!

Thank you so much! I was really struggling out here in impoverished brownstone Brooklyn, trying to figure out how to explain to my six-year old daughter about the
importance of labels, and of the superiority of expensive things.

Etta had heard from pals at (public) school that American Girl Dolls were just fabulous, but when we looked at the website and saw the prices, we warned her that if she really really wanted one for Christmas, she wouldn’t be able to get too many fun doll accessories and other stuff. Plus, she has a 3 year old sister, and it would have been really hard to find a way to sit on top of Piper for the next three years to keep her from touching the impeccable and thoughtfully priced American Girl Doll.

Silly Etta, she chose to spend her own money (a mere $29.99!) a few weeks before Christmas last year, on an 18-inch doll at Target. The doll’s name is Gracie, and she came with a ballet outfit and several clever accessories.

You’d think the doll would be extra special for her because she earned every penny she paid for it, and you know what? You’d be right! It was special! She loved it. And she got another one for Christmas (named Robin) and her three year old sister got her very own Target doll too. Named Vicki, I think (but who can keep track of these random names, those dolls didn’t even come with books!). We weren’t so worried about the damage Piper would inflict on her cheap doll. We actually thought her doll was kind of cute (again, silly us!).

Poor thing, Etta thought she was lucky to have all of these great dolls--and she had loads of fun dressing them, carting them around, treating them like special little baby dolls. How on earth were we going to explain to her that her dolls weren’t REAL dolls and didn’t deserve her love and affection?

What were we going to do?!

American Girl Place to the rescue!

When her friend Julie invited her to go to the American Girl Place to have her doll’s hair styled, Etta was thrilled. “Come spend a day you’ll never forget!” the website promised. And boy did you deliver.

Frommers Guide to New York says “don’t forget to bring [your] favorite doll so it can get a makeover at the store’s own doll salon.” I know it’s craaaaazy that a Target fake (that cost only $29.99 of Etta’s real saved money!) would be her favorite doll but it was.

At least it used to be.

Back when she thought it was real.

She’ll never forget the feeling of waiting in line at the salon. The anticipation, the special feelings welling up in her body. She’d spent extra time in the morning dressing Gracie for the outing. Etta dressed extra-pretty too. Well, sort of thrift-store pretty. Hand-me-down pretty. Not expensive pretty. But she went off with her head held high. Feeling pretty and important and deserving. Courageous little girl.

When she got to the front of the line she was shown a menu of hairstyles to choose from for her doll. Her friend’s mom was surprised that the price had gone up from $10 a doll to $20, but Julie had earned this reward (and, as luck would have it, Etta really needed to learn a lesson), so it would be worth it.

“This isn’t a real doll!” the stylist exclaimed. (Thank your stylist!--we never would have had the heart to explain it that way!). And to prove that a fake doll isn’t worth the plastic she’s molded out of, she refused to do the doll’s hair.

I’m not sure exactly what’s in it for your company, because you still stood to make $20 off of my daughter for doing the fake doll’s hair. I have two thoughts on that. Either her $20 wasn’t worth the same as someone else’s $20 (in which case I’ve learned something new too!) OR it was worth the $20 to you to be able to be the one to break the news to, I mean, to *enlighten* my little girl. You do promise to teach little girls, don’t you?

And she cried and cried and cried, and your stylist held her ground. That was a good lesson for her too. That feelings don’t have a place in "the heart of Manhattan’s prestigious shopping neighborhood" (another quote from your website).

And did you realize how loyal to you all the other mommies in line were? You’d have been proud of them.

One chided Etta for not knowing she couldn’t bring a fake doll to the store. Tsk tsk. She’s in first grade now and can read by herself (taught herself, in fact). She probably should have done the research. There’s another great lesson for her. (Thanks mom in line!)

One mom muttered to another that Etta probably couldn't afford a real one. Great hunch! She's six!

One mom just smiled and said "Well, American Girl Dolls aren’t for everyone, you know.” A sentence cleverly crafted to make Etta feel like someone cared about her but also to be aware that she really didn’t belong there in your fancy store with the other, richer, better girls. How compassionate!

So, another little girl had a life-changing experience at The American Girl Place!

Hooray for you!

To think, she might have gotten through first grade with her self-confidence intact!

As a former personal shopper at FAO Schwarz (the big one on 5th Avenue!), I know that rules can always be bent, and on-the-spot judgement calls are allowed. In some places, they actually have a ‘customer is always right,’ mentality. Ridiculous!

You’re no fool, American Girl Place! You’re in this to educate little girls. And educate Etta you did. She knows she’s inferior now. Knows her dolls are worthless. Knows her feelings don’t matter. Knows that fake dolls (even fake dolls willing to shell out $20 for an up-do!) won’t be tolerated.

You say that at American Girl, a girl "chooses the friend that’s just right for her--with a story true to the character or one she creates all her own.” I can’t wait to see how Etta adjusts her own self-image to match what she’s learned about her worthless doll!

As promised, her experience at your store gave her "memories she’ll cherish forever." You cared enough to realize that there’s a limit to what I can teach her at home and you rushed in and offered up some good old-fashioned and completely unforgettable public humiliation!

Good job!

Forever grateful,
Etta’s mom.

When I was little my grandmother gave me a threft store doll. It was the best thing I every gotten. My family could not afford the AG dolls. I am 18 now and I still have the doll and love it greatly. I still sleep with her every night

Please tell you daughter that her doll needs her love and to never let her go. Buy he little things for her doll, or make things other doll will never have

I promise that doll will be worth the world to her as mine has

I also wish to say that when I have children I will never buy the AG dolls for them. I will get them an old fastion on to love and care for..

Gracie is a lucky doll to have your daughter

i must say I have had a target doll and most girls do not have the proper hair care for the doll. that makes the dolls hair hard to care for. it took me an hour to style that doll's hair reasonabley.i have 9 american girl dolls and they have yet to displease me.

Wow.AG has no rights to do that.On the website,it says favorite doll. Not AG doll, doll. This is product falsification.

I love American Girl, but this story made me sad. That stylist obviously has no heart for little girls, and shouldn`t be working at an American Girl store. Poor Etta.

Anonymous said...

This is awful! I am actually a doll hair stylist at the American Girl Place in New York. And this story is very very sad! I have only recently started working there, but I have definitely seen another stylist doing a doll's hair that was not an actual American Girl doll. I can't believe that that particular stylist would do that. I don't think it would happen with the stylists that are here now. I would certainly take the time to do Etta's doll's hair!! I hope that that hasn't happened to other girls. Etta's doll is precious to her, I know. I grew up loving dolls, myself.

Anonymous said...

Wow. I love American girl but this surprised me a lot. I can't believe ag would do that to a freaking six year old! That is seriously LOW. Etta, Gracie still needs your love no matter what anyone says. And this is coming from someone with four ag dolls. I have seen the target dolls and they are very pretty. That stylist should be ashamed of herself. If I were her i would apologize to you and give you a brand new ag doll and free hairstyles for the rest of forever.and if I saw those mom you dont want to know what I would have said to them (there would be a lot of swearing). Remember Gracie still need love.

I feel very sorry for Etta. If everything happened the way the blogger posted, then I hope the stylist either had retraining or was fired.

We own both Target Dolls and American Girl Dolls. There is a huge difference in their hair, thus part of the difference in cost (part of. Not the whole reason). However, that does not excuse the stylists reaction and behavior.

Part of me does not believe the whole blog and part of me wonders how much of a friend the other mother really is. The cynical part of me feels the other mom wanted to prove her daughter was better for having a real AG doll. On the other hand, it also seems like the original poster maybe just doesn't like the cost of AG Dolls, and made up this story for a negative reaction towards AG.

American Girl is just a brand it doesn't make you a better person for owning it, or for snubbing it. I dont drive a Mercedes, but I recognize it is a quality brand. I love Target, but have had bad customer service and good customer service.

I'm not too proud to shop at the Dollar Tree or to use coupons.

I do not believe the company is to blame for the alleged interaction, but I do feel the stylist and the other adults reaction is a negative mark on human behavior.

Anonymous said...

That was really cruel of the stylist, but you can't really blame the American Girl Company itself. Every company has it's rules that are made to help it from tumbling in the economy. Unfortuneately, this particular stylist took it too seriously and was most likely(say 100%?)a brat herself. Etta was only 6, no one-not even an adult-should be treated that way. Different things are special to different people. Keep your head high, Etta, just as you did as you walked in.

And a note to other people? Don't bash American Girl around. Everyone who read this story is angy-I get it-but saying American Girl isn't "good enough" or is "stupid" is silly. American Girl products are made of quality, and they really think hard about their designs and making girls happy.

Good luck Etta! And don't give up on your doll. YOU bought it, that alone makes it REALLY special!

Okay, so I admit I'm a huge American Girl fan. I have one of the dolls, I've received the magazine since I was eight, and I still love their new products. (By the way, I'm fifteen.) I actually went to an AG place for the first time recently, because my younger cousin was visiting and she loves AG even more than I do. But I also understand the budget problem. Most of my doll accessories, and all of my other dolls, were from generic brands. (In fact, most of them were from Target! The My Generation line, to be exact.) And for that stylist to be so hard-hearted.... and for those moms to be so ugly!... well, I'm beginning to see why some of the little girls (and not-so-little-anymore) are such brats today. If I had been there, I would've given that lady a piece of my mind. But really, while AG does have outrageous prices and could use a few changes, I don't think it's fair of you to take one stylist's words, and the words of other moms (who have nothing to do with the AG company) and write up AG as a horrible monster that destroys little girls' dreams. Juts my thoughts.

Lora said...

I know the reason why the stylist didn't let Gracie get her hair done. I have had a Target My Generation Doll since I was six,and the hair falls out whenever you style it. It almost makes the doll not worth it. I can't believe the stylist was so rude. She could have just said that the hair would fall out if she styled it. I saved my allowance for a year and got Kit. American Girl is really high quality. That lady was obviously really rude.

I have to say I am shocked by this story. I just made reservations to bring my daughter and her grandmother up the Los Angeles American Girl Cafe for her birthday. My daughter does not own an American Girl doll because they are WAY over priced, but she does NOT know that. My daughter's doll "Madisson" is actually a Madam Alexander doll but we have been buying American Girl clothes for the last three years. As far as my daughter is concerned she "has" an American Girl doll, but I'm not going to tell her otherwise. This story has caused me great concern with our lunch reservation as well as spending her $150 on clothing and accessories at the American Girl store. Sorry American Girl, you just lost another customer! Shame on you for making someone feel that they don't live up to your standards. It's amazing that my money for your clothes and accessories means nothing if we don't purchase your dolls. If anyone is interested I will be selling two American Doll gift cards online starting tomorrow!

Anonymous said...

Wow. I hope Etta is okay. I'm a kid and I got a fake American girl doll before I got an ag doll in my opinion it doesn't matter on the quality or anything like that. All that matters is that it means something to you. If my mom and I were in your situation my mom would have lost her temper by giving those moms a little lesson themselves.

Anonymous said...

This is a ridiculous story! I work as an American Girl Place hairstylist and we do style the hair of non-American girl dolls. I think this is just a pitch to make AG look bad.

Anonymous said...

THIS IS TERRIBLE
I have a daughter who would just love an ag doll but i have found out that this is a rippoff i mean a few clothes and a backstory you CAN do this yourself with an even more special doll i have a two teddy bear cats from when i was little my self about 4 or so and i was willing to make very special heart felt clothes and furniture for them and they were about A FIVER each they were very special to me and this is horrible why in the name of sams heck would you tell a little girl who loves her doll that it is NOT REAL it is its there isnt it seriously EVERYTHING is real EXPENSIVE or NOT i dont give two horse sh*ts about what other people think about my 'UNREAL DOLL' I MEAN GET A FREAKIN GRIP!!!!!!!!!! >:(

Anonymous said...

gosh. i mean i am no mother i am actually a child and still absolutely discusted by that hair stylist. i do like american girl but i think it was just wrong that they would not style Etta's doll's hair. There is nothing wrong with having a different kind of doll. in fact i had a cheaper doll before and there was nothing wrong with her. If Etta still for some reason wants an american girl doll. Try ebay, i have found lightly used dolls for 20 or 30 dollars.

I'm 11 years old and I was looking around for an American Girl doll recently. I bought a Springfield Doll named Emma with the help of a good coupon and I plan on buying clothes from American Girl and putting them on Emma and learning how to sew clothes for her.

I saw another blog which featured your story on Google and a couple of reviews on Amazon.com on Emma. One person said that they wanted to bring Emma to the store to get her hair styled and the stylist made her sign a waiver form. But maybe American Girl has changed their policy since your blog has first been released.

I hope Etta still loves her dolls and that the stylist that was working that day gets fired.

so sorry this happened to Etta! AMERICAN girl dolls are made in CHINA! so, they are FAKE Americans anyway! I am outraged at the cost of the dolls and that your daughter would be treated so poorly at a store. I just emailed the company that I will not be purchasing their dolls until they are made in the USA. As for those other moms, I would have had a word with them before leaving! Snobs!

Anonymous said...

Lol, I'm laughing so hard at almost all of the people posting on here. Especially the one Anonymous that posts novel-length comments and brags about buying fair-trade coffee (liek omg I'm such a hipster!) and Jody with all her kids Da'Neisha and Shaquisha and Chiquita and Donner and Blitzen...and so forth. And also at the people who claim American Girl is only for snobs. To those people, I think maybe you're just a tad resentful that Mommy never gave you an American Girl doll, no? ;) And I'm shaking my heads in disgust at the parents who destroy their kids' American Girl-related stuff without their permission. Boycotting is one thing, but I know if I were in their shoes, I'd never forgive you. Besides, destroying products that you've already purchased is useless--the company has your money so it doesn't matter to them if you destroy your purchase. And as for the OP, you're more likely to get some kind of apology and compensation if you actually contact the company than just whine about it online. I tried it with Ulta when they gave me problems and it worked wonders.

Anyway, whether this story is true or not, I do agree that even though the company is not at fault, the hairdresser sounds like a real jerk, and it would be wise for American Girl's higher-ups to give her the ultimatum of apologize or be fired, or apologize on her behalf. If I were in the stylist's place, I would've simply told Etta that her doll's hair is very different from an American Girl doll's hair, and offered to do something simple like tie a pretty bow in her hair (and charge nothing for it!). After all, there IS a difference between American Girl hair and Our Generation hair. While I wouldn't call one brand of doll "better" than the other (that's up to the consumer), it can't be argued by anyone that owns both brands that American Girl dolls are made out of higher-quality materials than Our Generation dolls, which is why they cost more. It was like that before Mattel took over. It's more of a difference between Kanekelon (which is the wig fiber AG hair is made from, and is considered one of the best wig fibers in the world) and Saran, which is what OG hair is made from. There is a lot more you can do with Kanekelon without fear of it being damaged as opposed to Saran, which is why some AG dolls are already made with somewhat complex hairstyles as opposed to OG dolls, who almost always come with straight hair. I have no AG dolls but do own two Life of Faith dolls (waits for gasps from the hipsters about purchasing from an unashamedly Christian line) that also have Kanekelon wigs. The Elsie doll has very curly hair just like the Elsie Dinsmore character she's based on and I wonder if all those adorable curls would be impossible in Saran doll hair. On top of that, it is a wig, and Our Generation dolls have rooted hair. Another key difference. If you're going to style your OG doll's hair, try looking up an online guide especially for their hair rather than attempt a regime that would be used on AG hair.

The last thing I have to say is to Etta, who is ten by now and I'm sure has completely forgotten about this or moved on--You're a wonderful girl with a wonderful doll you chose yourself. Never let anyone make you feel bad for purchasing a cheaper doll if she's what you truly wanted. And to all of the American Girl owners on here, don't let the reverse snobbery running rampant on here make you feel ashamed of the great doll you chose. I know some of you scrimped and saved just as much as Etta did for her dolly and weren't given yours on a silver platter. :)

I like my american girl dolls and all, but this story made me want to send american girl an email that says: f**** you!

I am 10 and I REALLY want a well hand-crafted My American Girl doll. I read this story out of curiosity. I was just looking up if My American Girl dolls were worth their price, and this popped up. I caught the words "American Girl" and "Place" so I took a look. I was horrified, just horrified at how this mother of this poor child talked. Am I the only one to notice how she is thanking American Girl for crushing her daughter. Etta now feels worthless, like no one likes her or cares. She feels crushed. If I was little and was in her situation, I would be nowhere. Now this part is for Etta's mother: What if your daughter grew up and became very famous, how would you feel then? Still happy that American Girl crushed Etta's dreams?!? No I don't think so. And for all those people who are disgusted at me because I am merely 10, think about this comment if I was a 36 year old mother of 3 who all own 1 American Girl doll. Let's see if it makes sense. Etta's mother sickens me. Just at the thought of her I feel I might vomit. She is the most disgusting human being on this planet. Even if Etta's mother never get's to read this, you DISGUST me. Now think of that as if I'm 10, which I am.
"Forever hateful"
Me(Of course I'm not putting my name, i may be 10 but im not that stupid)

I found your blog entry when searching for a reasonably priced American Doll online for a christmas present for my girl. Thanks to your story, I won't be spending any money on American Girl Doll products. We love the movies but we can sure get them from the library. I'll spend what little money I can come up with for handmade clothing and other 'fake' things for her 'fake' doll.

Sorry, but I just had to comment after reading your post. I agree that the mothers in line were unbelievably rude and certainly deserved a thorough lambasting for their horrid behavior. The employee however, was just doing her job. Yes, in a perfect world she might have taken you aside and explained discretely that it just wasn't possible to style the doll's hair, but she didn't appear to be rude, just sticking to company policy. What I'm really trying to figure out is how you turned an employee telling you that she can't style the doll's hair because it's not an American Girl doll, into "public humiliation" and implying that your daughter is inferior and worthless.
The one thing that just astounds me is that you take absolutely no credit whatsoever for causing this debacle. Had you had the sense to call and check beforehand to see if it was okay to bring the doll in to have her hair styled you would have completely avoided disappointing and disenchanting your daughter. I mean really, what were you thinking?
And in case you're wondering, my daughter has both American Girl Dolls and the cheaper knock-off dolls, and she loves them both equally.
PS - to the lady who would have spit in the face or punched the mothers in line, you have serious anger management issues!!!

Anonymous said...

I am so sorry your daughter had that experience. Another part to this experience, how horrible your daughter's friend's mother must have felt. Also, the other people should have walked out of the store instead of supporting them further. I wouldn't want my daughter to have witnessed that and think it was okay.

I have been trying to avoid this franchise because I want my daughter to consider worth before purchase. She's not a doll fanatic, so her interest does not justify the cost. she wants one because of the commercials but doesn't play with her other dolls now. Now I will definitely stand my ground.

The company should read your story. I hope the franchise changes, and it's employees start attending talks about "Bullying" that they have in the elementary schools.

IMPORTANT NOTE I hope you read: This post was made almost 5 years ago. AG Salons do now style other 18" doll hair, but with restrictions since it is not their product. A friend of mine experienced this not very long ago and they styled her niece's non AG doll hair. Please keep this in mind. Posts like these have made a difference and some places really do listen!

Your story breaks my heart. It was the same when I was a child with the "Cabbage Patch" dolls. Haven't we learned?

When my daughter was four she wanted an American Girl Doll - we thought she was too young. She has had "Eva" from Target for two years and loves her. She has now asked Santa for "another American Girl doll." A sister for Eva. I think she knows Eva isn't "real" but she doesn't care. Should we?

The stylist and the folks in line at that store should be ashamed.

i feel guilty for having my Nellie now ;/ It is horrid that those people treated you like that! I would have asked to speak to the store manager, right then and there.

This story is horrible, and indeed those snobby, snotty moms should be ashamed of themselves! I hope Etta's self-esteem has recovered.

I've refused to buy genuine American Girl things, because paying exclusive prices for a label is something I am trying to teach my girls is absurd. They are approaching the age where it is beginning to matter to their friends, but I am trying to keep them grounded. AG and similar companies make it more difficult.

To 10 year "Anonymous" that posted on 10/30: Etta's mom was using something called sarcasm to express her anger/frustration/disgust with the way Etta was treated at the AG store. Believe me, she did not like how those awful women behaved.

OKAY, I DO lOVE AMERICAN GIRL, BUT THAT IS SICK. I AM AN 11 YEAR OLD GIRL AND I LIVE IN ENGLAND(IM ENGLIH) SO HAVING AMERICAN GIRL IS WONDERFUL. I HAVE ONLY BEEN TO AG ONCE. IT WAS THE LA STORE. I LOVED MY DAY, I GOT LOTS OF ACCSESSORIES AND OUTFITS FOR MY HISTORICAL JULIE AND I TOO GOT HER HAIR DONE. I THOUGHT THE WOMAN WHO SERVED ME WAS RUDE BECAUSE SHE SAID "WOW, IT DOSENT LOOK LIKE YOU LOOK AFTER YOUR DOLL VERY WELL!" SHE WAS BEING SERIOUS TOO!!!!
ANYWAY, MY DAY WAS GREAT AND I LOVED MY MEAL WITH MY DOLL!!!!! THANKYOU AG FOR MAKING MY DAY
POOR LITTLE ETTA THOUGH. AG RELLY MADE HER DAY... :(
BEING 11, PEOPLE MIGHT SAY I AM UNREASONABLE. WELL I'M NOT. I BELIEVE AG DOLLS ARE OVERPRICED PIECES OF PLASTIC! BUT I DO LOVE THEM. AT FIRST, I JUST HAD A DESIGN A FRIEND FROM MY LOCAL STORE WHICH AS £30 AND INCLUDED THE DOLL WITH A CHARM BRACLET(18 INCH) AN OUTFIT WITH A CHARM, A PJ SET WITH A CHARM AND AN SCCSESSORIE SET WITH A CHARM. THAT WAS MORE REASONABLY PRICED. IT IS OK TO HAVE A "FAKE" OR A COPY, A DOLL IS A DOLL. I GOT MY FIRST DOLL, JULIE, IN 2007. MY MUM GOT IT FOR ME FOR CHRISTMAS. I WAS SOSOSO HAPPY. THEN, IN 2011, I GOT IVY WITH MY OWN MONEY. THIS CHRISTMAS(ONLY A FEW DAYS AGO) I GOT CECILE. I DO THINK AG IS LOVELY BUT THEY DO CATER FOR MANY SNOBS!!!!!!!!!

I've got to tell you, I find much of this blog to either be exaggerated or phony. I have three daughters who each own several "real" AG dolls as well as "fake" ones. They love them all, but do favor the real dolls. And not because they know they were more expensive. They have no idea how much any of them were. They were gifts from grandparents and we don't usually discuss how much things cost. We expect our girls to take care of their things regardless of the items monetary value.

I cannot imagine a mother making one of the comments you claim were made to your teary eyed daughter, much less three rude remarks from three total strangers. Furthermore, I have been to the NYC as well as the Atlanta AG store and have found all the stylist as sales people there to be very friendly and courteous - even during their busiest time, Christmas.

I also find it hard to believe you expected the AG stylist, who works in the AG store where only AG items are sold, to style your Target dolls hair. I wouldn't take my Suburban to a Mercedes dealership for service nor would I take my Brighton bracelet to a David Yurman store to be polished. And those stores wouldn't turn me down because they wanted to be rude or hurtfull, they simply are not equipped to work on items they do not manufacture and cannot be held responsible for them. The AG company has no way of knowing if your Target dolls hair can be treated with the solution they use on the AG dolls and they certainly could not be held responsible if anything happened to it.

If the gist of this story is true, my heart does go out to your daughter. Although, I'm sure she is over it by now. And I do strongly feel you could have prevented Etta any embarrassment she may have experienced by simply calling the AG store first to see if the salon worked on other brands of dolls.

Same things happened to us except it just felt different. The girl took my nieces doll and petted her head and told us how nice her hair was. Then she told us that they really comb and hank the dolls hair when they style it and can replace the wig if they ruin it but can't guarantee other dolls. So she gave my niece a free ribbon and told her to do her dolls hair in this pretty ribbon for free! Just a totally different feel! Some people just have the gift and some don't...sadly that rubs of on other people too!

How are you any better with your 'retard' comment?

Ohg for goodness sake! Chip on your shoulder or what? Who cares? A nice doll is a nice doll. What it costs has nothing to do with it. I sense lots of feeling sorry for yourself that your daughter can't have this stuff. Why would you want her to have such bilge anyway? It's up to you to teach her values and morality not to get upset at the lack of other people's. So your daughter can't have an expensive doll, boo hoo neither can many of our children and we don't care. You are obviously fixating on this minor issue in your child's life and you are getting her to dwell on something very shallow. I mean why throw your money away on such rubbish?

Get some values and priorities, stop with the jealousy and envy and then pass that important stuff on to your daughter. In the scheme of things it just doesn't matter. Get on with teaching your daughter to be nice and believing in their own choices. A Target doll is a valid option it's not inferior and we don't need to cry about it. Many children have no toys and no playtime.A 'fake' doll. I mean come on!!! What a concept! Why are you encouraging your child to be botherered about such petty stuff. Get her to own and defend her choices and her life style and not hanker after that of others.

I just want to say that my daughter's Birthday is coming and I was contemplating taking her to American Girl Place for the whole experience. I want to thank Etta's mom for this very well written article. I will now make sure that I never give the place a penny. To the women out there that told Etta's mom she should have researched whether you could bring another doll there...are you kidding me. The day that a place turns away a little girl that is going to give them $20 to do a doll's hair ($20, that’s already ludicrous) but willing to pay them just the same...make's absolutely no difference as to the brand of doll that gets the up do. Someone that has the audacity to hurt a little girl’s feelings over something so petty is ridiculous. Are they going to tell people that they can't buy American Girl Place clothing to put on a Target doll??? What an awful situation...and those of you who are actually taking the time to write in and try and justify this woman's behavior should be ashamed. One day when someone goes out of their way to hurt your child's feelings in a situation that is completely unnecessary and avoidable, you might actually have some enlightenment and understanding on this issue. Until then, keep watching your Big Rich Texas shows and work on sticking your plastic noses in the air ; ) Heather

That is such a sad story. Every doll is special and "real" to the little girl who owns it.

Laura said...

Yes, another person is commenting! After all these years, I'm sure you're sick of hearing this stuff!

In AG's defense, their dolls' hair is made of Kanekalon (also used to make wigs for real people) and other kinds of doll hair may be different textures? Still, all the AG stylists do is rinse the hair clean, brush it out, style it, and trim the ends if necessary. It would not have killed them to do something nice for a little girl--especially since they would be getting paid if they did!

The old company (Pleasant Company, 1986-1998) probably wouldn't have pulled this stunt. I blame Mattel--a lot has changed since they bought AG out, not all of it good. (You'd think since Mattel also makes $10 Barbies they'd know better than to lambast cheap dolls!)

Anonymous said...

This story makes me so sad because I have an our generation doll that I love! I don't just love her because I don't have an AG doll because I do! I feel so bad for Etta though.

Anonymous said...

Here it is 5 yes later I am reading this because my 5yr old daughter is begging for an AGD. Well, I hope you receive this as I think you should start a blog or forum for this & for parents who have decided to "rise up" so to speak, and refuse to buy the AG product(s). I've made up my mind & I would never want to associate with people who are so shallow, nor would I want for my children to become influenced by such horrible people. Etta is much better than those people simply because she has feelings. Clearly you are the better parent for making the decision NOT to buy the AG doll initially which ultimately led to shaping the personality of one fabulous little girl. She will remember this always & it will make her stronger because of the kind of mother you are. Kudos! It just sucks to see your baby cry! I can't stand seeing anyone cry, well maybe those shallow insignificants at the "salon" & the AG corp. I wouldn't mind seeing them shed a tear or two :) thank you for writing this article I hope you are inspired to do more...

Anonymous said...

that's just horrible. american girl doll should be ashamed.there's nothing wrong with Etta's dolls, and I hope she knows that.

Anonymous said...

I do feel that the stylist should have done little something for the little girl but I have to say that it was the mom's job to make sure the store entertained other dolls at that event before making her child so vulnerable. It is not unusual for any company to entertain their products only. Furthermore , we only know one side of the story.

Anonymous said...

That woman should have got fired.... you cant talk to a little girl like that. Im only 13 and if i brought one non ag there, and she told me that i would have hit her in the face with it. Okay violence is bad but c'mon if her daughter couldnt afford a doll she wouldnt want her daughter to feel the way Etta. Even if she didnt have a real doll she could have still DONE THE DOLLS HAIR!

Anonymous said...

For the her to say that to a six year old is unbelievable, there are so many ways she could of handled this. It is just heart breaking and scary to think she works with young children. The only reason I got anything "big" as a child was because we had a big family and they would pool money. I leaned that gifts meant more than labels so I understand what this poor little girl went through. I am so sorry that this happened.

I just want to add my 2 cents. I had never even heard of American Girl dolls under I received a catalog in the mail about 2 years ago. I flipped through it and thought people must seriously be out of their minds to spend that much on any doll. The outfits for the dolls alone are more than I would spend on clothes for me!! So imagine how happy I was to see exact replicas at Kmart for $20! They even had matching outfits for both girl and doll at a fraction of the price. My daughter loves her dolls, she 6 too. My cousin has a real AD and I asked to see it. For all that money I expected they would be at least American made. Nope, China!!!! So to the people with more money than brains: you are totally being HAD!!! I looked at each doll carefully and could tell no noticeable difference between the two. Where is that extra $80 going??? Yeah, you're smart LOL. Oh that's right you pay the extra so you can take the doll to get its hair done for $20!!! Dumbasses.....when will the madness end??

Anonymous said...

An "American" girl doll is made in China. Does that sound like the real deal to you??

Five years later, but let me offer my two cents:
I work at an American Girl Salon. When they opened, nobody realized off-brand dolls would want to get their hair done too. All it took was one heart-broken little girl, and a better store policy was put in place. If you go to any salon today, they'll ask you to sign a waiver if you have a non-AG doll (we don't know the strength, limits, or construction of the hair, and if something happens, we can't replace it in the store. It's only happened once at my store that the hair got damaged, and we apologized profusely, the girl understood and I thing got a free milkshake.) But any stylist would be happy to style any doll. I'm sorry this happened to you, and the stylist did NOT handle this as she should have, but I hope you realize that your incident sparked a huge change in the whole company, both in policy and attitude, and we've made thousands of girls very happy because of you. All new hires discuss your story in orientation as an example of how to not be respectful - we now love every doll that comes in!

Anonymous said...

It's been several years since this was posted. But, funny to say that my girl wants an American Girl Doll, but after this I refuse to give them a dime!

Anonymous said...

Wow, Interesting on how one complaint can change a store policy. That's why I always say if there is a problem or a compliment put it in writing because it makes a difference for everyone. Sad story but glad to here they corrected the issue. Hopefully Etta knows how she helped change and make other little girls that don't have an AG doll Happy!

Wow, so happy I'm seeing this, so many years later. I'm just deciding what to do for my 3 little girls. We're lucky enough to be in a position to buy these dolls for them, and I was considering because I like the book, historical tie in.

But how horrific a story. What shameful behavior of the store (who clearly had a policy), the personnel (for following it) and the mothers on the line. Makes my skin crawl. As if wealth is somehow tied to worth.

Thank you for sharing, and ensuring that we never spend money on this brand.

Wait, are you (the mother of Etta) happy that they called her doll "fake". If you did, you are a HORRIBLE mother. H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E! It sounds like you are glad that her dreams and emotions are crushed. No mother should think that any doll is
"fake". Dolls are dolls. Look it up in the dictionary that doll she had qualified as a doll. It is a REAL doll. It is not a big brand doll. Maybe not the best quality doll. But it is a doll, and she has a right to love it. You are one of those horrible moms!

Fruits are digested extremely quickly and digestion occurs completely in the small intestine. Because of these factors, fruit is best eaten separately, not with a meal, as the fruit will get held up in the stomach if eaten with a protein food, and while there may decompose and ferment in the stomach. Also important to note is the fact that there are different categories of fruit. Fruits can vary from acid to sweet, and it's best not to combine sweet and acid fruits. I cant beleive a mom would show up at an AG store and not check first if other type dolls could have their dolls hair done! You set your own daughter up for this. Maybe check first next time. The blame lies with you mom if your daughter suffered!
and this story sound like a lot of hearsay and is soooo exaggerated.
Im sure mom is the one who was embarrassed and wants everyone to know " how poor Etta suffered".
Mom take responsibility for your thoughtless actions. look what you did to Etta. I would never have been so heartless as to set any of my 5 kids for this disappointment.
And by the way
American girl co. has never been anything but respectful and wonderful where we are concerned.
I have even seen girls bring other dolls in to the store and the employes treated them the same as AG dolls.

Anonymous said...

I would like to say my daughter took her fake doll to the AGP and the employees were nothing but polite and respectful towards my daughter and her doll. I do not know if this story was a wake up call for AG or just made up. If the mother wasn't there I doubt she has all of the correct information. Also as you can see from all her other posts she openly admits to being over emotional. I would also like to point out that AG even offers to let you borrow a doll during lunch and maybe I am not quite sure but for the entire day. Etta's mother knew she was sending Etta in to a situation for possible judgement especially if she would be playing with these dolls around and with other girls her age. Who one cannot trust to keep their 6 year old mouths shut about their own opinions. I do not believe the AG employee was that rude because AG has extremely strict guidelines for their employees. If this truly happened that salon stylist was probably fired that day. Who are we to make judgement about an entire company based on one employee and several mothers who do not work there, and all this information is coming from the mouth and seen through the eyes of a six year old.

blоg! I had a quick questіon in which I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was interested to find out how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I have had a hard time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there. I do take pleasure in writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be wasted just trying to figure out how to begin. Any recommendations or hints? Thank you!

I just came across your story, surprised to see it happened 6 years ago, and that I hadn't heard about this. I am appalled and actually cried for your daughter. When I was little the most precious thing in the world to me was a doll my dad had bought for me at K-Mart. I am sickened by the way you were treated... I certainly hope American Girl issued an apology and that the "stylist" still can't sleep at night. I have a 3 year old daughter who will never own one of those dolls, now that I know what they are really all about.

NovaBrite said...

This is the stupidest pile of crap that you're so irrationally angry. I blame YOU as a parent for not investigating whether or not a company would work on an outside product from one of its competitors, before sending your daughter into that store with the doll. If you did actually objectively describe the events in question, and the stylist really was rude to your child, then she certainly did not handle the situation correctly. A more appropriate response would have been saying "I'm very sorry but I'm not allowed to style your pretty dolly's hair, since it's a different type of hair from the ones we work on here. Since I can't help you with that, how about we see if we can find you an accessory or t-shirt for your dolly that would cost the same price as the hair salon?" See, that's a nice way to say no. But bottom line, why are you surprised here? Your kid has not only a competitor's product, but an inferior product. I'm not saying this as a snob; it's objectively true. I restore dolls as a bit of a cottage industry of my own. I've learned a thing or two about re-wigging dolls. American Girl uses actual WIGS on their dolls, and they're extremely high quality. Dolls like Our Generation and the 18" Madame Alexander dolls use cheap nylon rooted hair which has a completely different texture and is rooted in the "scalp" rather than sewn into a mesh cap. You literally CANNOT style it the same way. You can't. Seriously. My daughter had an Our Generation and Madame Alexander "knock off" American girl. From just brushing their hair a couple times over the course of the first week of ownership, they became matted and ratty and ruined. I ended up cutting the hair down to the scalp and buying a doll wig online for $20 each and gluing them to the dolls' heads. Only then, with the new wig, did the quality come close to American Girl dolls (which I work on a lot; I've restored about 20 of them). Seriously, what you did is the equivalent of taking your Kia to a Land Rover dealership and then getting angry that they couldn't work on your car. It's a completely DIFFERENT product that is totally differently made. So yeah, you didn't do your research (I'm shocked that you didn't consider that they wouldn't work on a competitor's product) and then you want someone else to blame for your kid's hurt feelings. If the stylist was actually that rude, that sucks. The company's policies aren't to be blamed for things though; there are lots of valid reasons not to have tried to style your doll's hair. The stylist probably would have wrecked its hair and then you'd be calling out the company about that! Everyone of the ignorant sheep posting here has their hearts in the right places, but their heads aren't in the right place on this one. No one wants their kids to be sad; that's why as a parent, you have to be thoughtful about reality before you make promises that you can't deliver. You should have never let her take a Target doll to an American Girl store for styling. You wouldn't take your Gap jeans to Nordstrom and expect to get the complementary tailoring services, would you? Just think about it before you simply try to inspire rage in people who don't know anything about how the products are made (as you also clearly do not).

Anonymous said...

Aww, this is so sad! How can people treat her like this? Even though I buy from AG, I still can't believe they would treat her like this! I understand them not doing Gracie's hair, because they don't want to burn the hair off, but still, they can't make Etta feel like this! That lady probably just was just one of those cranky workers, because the salon ladies at AG Houston are really nice! My AG doll isn't those new ones, so mine gets criticized, but still, they have no right to do this to Etta! There is no such thing as a ''fake'' doll, all dolls are real and need loving! Tell Etta she and Gracie are awesome, and don't listen to what mean old elitists say. Me and Kaya are sad that this happened!

I just sent them an email about this! Can't wait for there reply about it!

American girl has the WORST employees I've ever seen in my life. They are all spoiled brats that like to be rude to all either custermers. They don't care about anyone, and they are there just to make some money. I've heard so many stories like this one. And i have also had to deal with one of these brats. ( witch sadly is like this one... ) and I have seen a little girls heartbreak when a employee told the girl that she didn't have enough money to buy a outfit. ( witch she was only a dollar away from the price.. ) She also said it in a very rude way, witch made the little girl start to cry. Then the mom and her daughter walked out of the store upset. I have never liked their employees and I NEVER will.

Anonymous said...

I just called the American Girl Doll store; they allow any doll (even a non AG doll) or stuffed animal to be brought to birthday parties. The employee said it has always been this way; apparently the story of "fake" AG dolls is urban legend. You can all the store and verify for yourselves!

Anonymous said...

@NovaBrite
Who the heck do you think you are? How did you not comprehend the simplest, and most important, point in this post? It wasn't about the employee's refusal to work on the doll, it was how she insulted and humiliated a CHILD. If that is too difficult for you to understand, perhaps you should do the world a favor and just disappear. My guess is your hypersensitivity stems from having done something similar to what the AG stylist did. Perhaps you should seek atonement, instead of insulting a mother and her child who did not deserve the treatment they received. Now, go away please.

Audrey said...

Listen- to all you people leaving comments and the person posting too- I am so sorry about what happened to Etta, but I don't think you should hold a grudge against American Girl! They are a wonderful company with beautifully made dolls and clothing. I have six dolls (most of them i bought with my own money) and my little sisters have a few too, and we love them! the stories have great lessons and historical value! my Addy doll is my favorite- I learned so much about the Civil War- my teacher was so impressed! Also, American Girl is the only company who has actually answered all of my letters and ideas... something a company has never done to me before. Actually, I want to work for the creative team when i grow up! so as you can see, It really surprised me when I read this. It is so unlike American Girl to do this, because I had the EXACT SAME situation with my little cousin... and nothing like this happened- so it must've been the employee. American Girl will always be in my family, and I will get them for my girls in the future, too. Again, I am so sorry for what happened to Etta- Give her a hug for me. All I ask of you guys is to give American Girl another chance.
XOXO, Audrey- age 14
